Kenmare is a haven of tranquility, gourmet food, superb accommodation and breathtaking scenery in one of the most natural, unspoilt environments in Europe. The Irish name for Kenmare is Neidin which means 'Little Nest'. It is so called because the town is cradled in the the heart of the Kenmare Bay and is surrounded by mountains. Kenmare is the perfect area from which to explore the internationally famous Ring of Kerry and the rugged Ring of Beara.
Kenmare has many brightly coloured shops which sell much of the local produce. Another wonderful event is the weekly market which is held on Wednesday. The street fills up with many stalls on which you will find wonderful produce from fresh fish to olives and handmade jewelery to antiques.
Founded in 1670, though many generations have passed since then, the unique charm and inherent beauty of the town remains unchanged. The Tourist Board, Boórd Fáilte, officially recognised the historical, cultural and environmental significance of Kenmare by bestowing upon it the title of Kerry's first Heritage Town.
The Ring of Kerry is known worldwide, it follows the coastline of the Iveragh peninsula. It has stunning views that will take your breath away as you take the time to explore this beautiful unspoilt area. Along the route are stunning villages, copious amounts of historical landmarks, sandy beaches and coves.
To the north of Kenmare is the Killarney National Park, 10,000 hectares of woodland and magical mountains, with spectacular views of the lakes of Killarney.
The unspoiled Ring of Beara lies to the south of Kenmare. Its rugged beauty is astounding and at times unbelievable, the views are captivating and will keep you enthralled for many hours. Traffic is minimal and there are many archaeological sites along the way.
Whether it is walking on the mountains, cruising on the bay, horse riding, golfing, fishing, touring or soaking up the best of music you will not be disappointed in Kenmare.
Due to its geographical location next to the Kenmare Bay and River Finnehy the scenery is hard to find in any other place in Kerry. Kenmare is one of the most popular tourist places in Kerry and due to the many activities which are available, you are spoilt for choice and a long holiday is needed in order to explore all of Kenmare.
